In February 2022, I was physically and emotionally exhausted after a long shift on a busy antenatal/postnatal ward. Deflated, I picked up an object to loosen my afro curly braided hair. To my surprise, loosening and detangling my hair with this object was easier, faster and less painful than using a standard comb. A few months later, I switched back to a normal straight-toothed comb, and the difference was striking. That’s when the idea truly clicked.

Hair textures vary, but the struggle of detangling – whether with braids, curls, straight hair or coil hair – is one many people share. I realised that what I had stumbled upon was not just a personal solution but a design with the potential to support anyone looking for a gentler, more convenient and more effective way to care for their hair.

This insight led to the creation of the SCOMB, a 2-in-1 comb designed to both loosen protective styles and detangle hair with ease. It was born out of lived experience but shaped with inclusivity in mind: a comb for all who want healthier, hassle-free hair care without compromising comfort or time.
